If you are into painting old working boat as I am (shrimpers, trawlers, crabbers, skiffs), the Core Banks area is a gold mine. Beaufort, Marshallberg, Harkers Island, and Atlantic all have marinas with traditional handmade boats and all the colorful detritus that you see around boat yards. Beaufort is a good home base with colonial homes, walkable streets, good food and reasonable rooms in the historic waterfront area. Friend and Beaufort plein air painter, Jimmy Craig Womble, has a…Continue

love to paint flowers from life and peonies are one of my favorites. Not only do they smell nice but they are so lovely- delicate and complicated at the same time. For the past 2 or 3 years I have been painting paintings of these lovely flowers because they are such a challenge. I had decided that every year I would paint at least one painting of peonies.
if you paint them in full bloom- there are many petals with which to involve oneself as well as their delicate coloring. The…
A bit of escapism from the hard winter we've been having at Jacksonville Beach. The morning light was very soft.
Then the first pastel of the season with Susan Garriques of the Toe River Valley Painters. The woods are more complicated, so I chose a larger sheet, 9 x 12, which still needs work.…Continue

Have you ever been blocked and don't have an idea what to paint? I am sure you have- most creative people go through this from time to time. When I go through, this I either do drawings or small paintings. I seem to have been a little blocked since the termination of my big commission so I decided to do a few small pastels. I have not worked that much in pastels recently so I thought a few smallish ones would start the flow of ideas.
The first one I did was " lemons". One of…

I am pleased to share that the painting I did in Blowing Rock with the Charlotte Plein Air Painters was recently accepted into the American Impressionist Society annual exhibition. In Blowing Rock, I was not dressed for the bad weather so I did a 'plein air' painting close to the coffee pot to stay warm. "Chess on a Rainy Day", acrylic on canvas, 12" x 9". …Continue
I'm going to Carmella Jarvi's workshop today at 1pm at Matthews Community Center. Her presentation on Marketing at Tuesday's Matthews Artists Guild meeting was full of great ideas. It was the tip of the iceberg and I'm looking forward to the what else she has under water.

Catching the day in at Sweetgrass.
I'm off this morning to join other artists at 10 a.m at a site for the senses, McGill Rose Garden on N Davidson just off 277 near downtown Charlotte. It is layered with sweet frangrances floating among gorgeous flowers; bright, warm sunbeams piercing the tree canopy through the cool shade to dapple the mulched plants below. Lots to paint from roses to garden sculptures, trellis to trees, vegetable garden to the quaint…Continue
