"I've been having a love affair with nature for over 30 years with sketches and paintings to prove it. By working directly with my subject we form an emotional bond. I am eager to have a conversation and learn its secrets before I even pick up a pencil or brush. And if I'm lucky, I'll discover its underwear of cuts, scars and bruises making it all the more inspiring.
Using all my senses I try to express the feeling of a color, the dance of the wind at the top of the dunes at Coquina Beach, the evocative smell from the swamp at Alligator River Refuge, and the ripples of birdsong weaving through the grasses at the edge of a creek. My paper becomes infused with the location from occasionally using local water, applying a smudge of soil or leaf, and the very air itself merging with the paint. These paintings are my love letters from nature, meant to be savored over and over again."
