Event Description

The North Carolina Zoo is welcoming us to paint all day on Wednesday, June 29th.  Diane Villa, Curator of Design, a painter herself, will be helping so that we'll have places to paint rain or shine.  And the trams will help us get to all the great locations but some walking is necessary. We'll qualify for the group rate of $13 pp if we have at least 15 painters, otherwise it's $15 pp.

The NC Zoo is open 9-5 and we'll gather at the front entrance ticket booth at 9 but  info for people coming later will be available.

We need to paint solvent free.

Let me remind everyone that you want to use the main entrance which is The North American.  I will be out front from 8:30-9 otherwise just come when you can and have fun!

Diane Villiers ,who is the Art Director at the Zoo, has these sites to especially recommend:

Forest Aviary is a tropical bird site with orchids blooming, it is small so  get there early. Bird feeding at 9:30 for bird pic opportunity.

Desert Conservatory will be air temps but they keep the humidity low.

Dragon Fly Point is a picnic area, she thinks the water lilies are in bloom on the lake.

Grasslands area has vistas.

Marsh/Cypress Swamp area, especially for the trees.

If you want close ups of animals there is a Giraffe feeding every day for $2.

Lastly, there is an Art in the Park guide for the sculpture throughout.

They are very happy and excited to have us out and Wednesday is suppose to be a quiet(er) day but use the normal courtesies.  Diane says they would be thrilled to have us come again in a different season too.

Hi Cindy,

You can use linseed, walnut or other oils in place of OMS and Gamblin has a solvent free gel that I've heard good things about.  Since many people are painting without solvents now  there's lots of discussion of substitutes on the Internet that you might find interesting.

How do you paint solvent free with oil paints?

Hello Everyone,

To get the group discount rate they need to know by June 7th that we've met the min. number of 15 and I'll need to order the tickets. Naturally that means I'll need iron clad commitments!  Otherwise we'll all just pay the regular rate and have a fun day painting and supporting our zoo.
